Troop News 6/17/19

6/19 –  Troop Meeting and COH @ the Charter School 7 – 8:30pm

  • Final Troop Meeting and Court of Honor.
  • Court of Honor will begin about 7:15.  Scouts are expected to arrive at 7 to help set up.
  • Troop will provide large sub sandwich and water.  Families are asked to sign up to bring either a side, salad or dessert.
    • Please sign up here
  • Troop Class B T-Shirts and Sweatshirts will be available to buy.
    • T-shirts – $12 (T-Shirts are included in the cost if you are going to summer camp)
    • Sweatshirts – $25 for Adult sizes, $20 for Youth sizes

9/27 – 9/29 – September Troop Outing – Tenderfoot Weekend  Camp Wampatuc, Hingham, MA

  • Mandatory Troop outing for all scouts.  More details later.

If there is a memo field, please note the event/trip is that you are paying for.  Otherwise it will quickly become confusing who is paying for what.

If you have your PayPal account connected to your checking account you will not pay a fee.

If your PayPal account is connected to a credit card, then you will pay a fee (pretty much you cover the cost of the credit card transaction).

  • All scouts are strongly encouraged to attend camp with the Troop at Camp Squanto this summer. Camp plays an important role in individual scout development and strengthens our patrols and troop.
  • Camp runs from Sunday July 14th through Saturday July 20th
  • Early bird cost is $450 per scout, with additional brothers $350 each. After May 15th the cost per scout is $475.
  • Scouts will receive 2 new troop t shirts.  See above for more information about selecting sizes for the Troop T-shirts and ordering additional shirts.
  • Mr Klawson and Mr Hall will be attending for the full duration of the camp. The troop will need an additional 1 or 2 adults for each day the troop is at camp. If you can assist for 1 or more days please sign up.

Troop News 6/3/19

6/5 – PLC & Committee Meeting @ the Charter School

  • PLC (6:30 – 7:30)  Current and Newly elected leaders should attend.
  • Committee Meeting (7:30 – 8:30)    All adults are encouraged to attend the committee meeting.

 

6/7– 6/9  – June Troop Outing – Zip Line Canopy Tour & Camping Trip –  Camp Country Aire Campground in Charlmont, MA

  • If you are attending, please read through as new information has been added
  • Make sure you have completed and printed out the Zoar waiver;     https://www.zoaroutdoor.com/waivers.htm (click on the last one) 
  • Departure will be from the Franklin VFW Hall Friday June 6th. Meeting at 5pm for 5:30pm Departure. Sunday return to the VFW approximately 10am.
  • Scouts and adults should pack a lunch/dinner for Friday night to eat on the way.  It’s at least 2 hours from Franklin to the campground.
  • Saturday morning after breakfast drive to Zoar Outdoor for Zip Line Canopy Tour in the Berkshire Mountains (about 10 minute drive from Camp location).  Return to Camp Ground for lunch, possible swimming in pool and other activities.  Please bring a bathing suit accordingly.

Here is additional information about the Zip Line Trip:

A Typical Trip

  • A short hike from the base, our practice zip gives you a chance to get comfortable with zipping, braking and self-rescue on a short, low zip line. Once everyone is checked out and able to safely zip, our guides will take you up to the vehicles that will transport you to the top of the course.
  • A 10-minute 4×4 ride brings you half a mile and 500 feet vertically uphill to the start of the course where a short hike leads to the first take-off platform.
  • Your lead guide zips first to each platform and then each guest in your party is clipped in, one at a time by the other guide who lets you know when it’s okay to zip. Then you’re off!
  • As you approach the far platform, the lead guide signals you to brake or to keep coming so you reach the tree at a controlled speed. Before you’re unclipped from the zipline, your guide clips you into the belay loop on the tree so you’re always clipped in at height.
  • A rappel at the end of the top section of the course leads to a water break and a short downhill hike to the start of the next section. The lower course consists of sky bridges and longer zips that culminate your adventure in the trees.
  • A downhill hike leads back to our base where you can share stories and memories of the trip and look at photos of yourself zipping just moments before.

What to Wear/Bring

  • Wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the season, but avoid loose clothing that could tangle in ropes or other gear. Skirts or short shorts should be avoided. In late fall or winter months, it is better to come with too many articles of clothing than not enough. We go in the rain, so come prepared with rain gear if needed.

Spring & Summer Wear

  • Close-toed shoes (hiking boots or sturdy sneakers) For your safety, no sandals or flip-flops will be permitted.
  • Light jacket, fleece top, or sweater
  • Rain jacket with hood
  • Light pants
  • Comfortable longer shorts (chafing from the harness could occur with short shorts)
  • We will provide you with gloves

You should remove any dangling jewelry and tie long hair back. You will be asked to remove all items from your pockets before going on the tour.

If you plan on bringing a camera, smaller cameras with a lanyard are best. If you bring your phone to take pictures you run the risk of dropping or otherwise damaging your phone.

Items you bring on the tour may get lost along the course. Please leave valuables in the car. We can store your car keys for you while you are on the tour.
