Troop News: 12/31/12

Happy New Year!

THIS WEEK – PLC MEETING

TROOP RECHARTERING FOR 2013

KLONDIKE:  OPERATION POLAR BEAR  1/25-1/26th

  • Location:  Walpole Sportsman’s Association
  •  Klondike A test of Scout skills and endurance. Boy Scouts compete against Boy Scouts and Webelos Scouts against Webelos Scouts for ribbons and glory. Each Patrol forms into a “Stampeder Dog Sled Team” and competes as a separate expedition.
  • Mountain Man ~ Four Boy Scouts, ages 14 years and older, form a team to compete in a test of marksmanship, archery, axe throwing, log chopping, and skills of ingenuity and stamina. A team consists of exactly four boys from the same Troop.
  • L’Hivernant ~ Boy Scouts best a cold winter night’s sleep out. **Friday, January 25 ONLY **

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING, SNOWSHOEING & ICE FISHING 2/8-2/10

  • Details of the trip can be found in the 12/24/12 Troop News
  • Please contact Doug Hartnett dhartnett@highpointeng.com and let him know if you plan to attend this trip.   Please contact Doug now, but you can bring your Split Rock 020813 Perm to the meeting on January 9.   Please also let Doug know if you can lend snowshoes or cross country skis to the troop for this trip.
  • We will go to the Windblown cross country ski area in New Ipswich, NH. Scouts will snowshoe and cross country ski.   In the afternoon we will return to camp and go ice fishing.   A couple of years ago we had enough snow to make and sleep in snow caves!
  • The departure time is currently scheduled as Friday February 8. However, if the weather is poor on Friday night, we will start the trip early on February 9.
  • We need adult help …
    • Pull the trailer
    • Driving to and from the campsite and ski area
    • Cook lunch in the parking lot. (We provide the scouts with a hot lunch).
    • Ice fishing. If you can’t attend, can you lend us gear?
    • Ski or snowshoe with scouts.

MARCH – JUNE 2013 ACTIVITY UPDATE 

Bob Latshaw has done a bit of work over the last few weeks lining up trips.   Below is what he has been planning.  More details regarding these trips will be coming soon.

  • March – Merit Badge and Rank Advancement at Cachalot Scout Reservation in Plymouth (Booked)
  • April – Orienteering (heavy concentration on this skill) at Nobscot Scout Reservation in Framingham, MA (Booked)
  • May – East Bay Bike Path from Bristol RI to East Providence RI (Tentatively booked)
  • June – Canoe Trip on the Pemigewasset River in the White Mountains (Tentatively booked)

Troop News: Week of 12/24/12

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING, SNOWSHOEING & ICE FISHING 2/8-2/10

(we may depart on February 9, see below)
  • We have a fun trip planned for February and we need to get a headcount as soon as possible so we know how many sets of skis that we need to rent. Please contact Doug Hartnett dhartnett@highpointeng.com and let him know if you plan to attend this trip. Please contact Doug now, but you can bring your Split Rock 020813 Perm to the meeting on January 9. Please also let Doug know if you can lend snowshoes or cross country skis to the troop for this trip.
  • We’ve done this trip in the past and it is a lot of fun. We will go to the Windblown cross country ski area in New Ipswich, NH. Scouts will snowshoe and cross country ski.   • The theme of this trip is Winter camping. So if you attend this trip you will be sleeping outdoors. In the meetings leading up to the trip you will prepare for winter camping. Parents, we will communicate the proper equipment for a trip like this in upcoming meetings. Please work with your scout to prepare. I believe the troop has a couple of cold weather sleeping bags we can lend.
  • The departure time is currently scheduled as Friday February 8. However, if the weather is poor on Friday night, we will start the trip early on February 9. Please monitor your email, of all the trips we take, this is the one that is most like to be affected by weather. We may need to change our departure or return time based on the weather.
  • Finally, as with all trips, we need adult involvement to make this trip successful. We have rented a cabin for the adults to sleep in, so please help if you can. Please contact Bob Latshaw boblatshaw@yahoo.com if you plan to attend this trip. We need help with the following:
    • Pull the trailer
    • Driving to and from the campsite and ski area

We are close to finalizing the trips for March through June. An update will follow soon. We have put together an action packed agenda, but we need your help. We hope to see some new adult faces join us on these trips. When you receive the update you will be asked if your scout plans to attend. We will also have a list of duties where we need adult help. Please consider joining us on these trips.

Troop News: Week of 12/17/12

TROOP RECHARTERING FOR 2013

  • Please print out and complete the BSA – Troop Rechartering and Data Update 2013. Bring it and a check made out to “Troop 29” to the Troop meeting and give both to Anna dos Santos, Committee Chair.   Troop’s rechartering fee is $65.00 per scout and a Boys Life subscription is an additional $12.00.
  • During the rechartering process, the troop needs to identify the adults that will serve on the Troop Committee as well as Merit Badge Counselors.  If you would like to serve in any of these capacities and have not filled out an adult registration from, please do and bring it to the meeting.
  • Further details of the rechartering can be found in last week’s post.

SCOUT YANKEE SWAP AN HOLIDAY PARTY –  DEC 19TH

This week, your troop will be having a yankee swap with a $7.50 limit for a gift.

In addition, to support our community, your patrol leaders are coordinating a toy and food drive.  Please bring in a toy on the 19th that will be donated to  help other families in need.

Parents – to help with the celebration, we ask for your help in brining some holiday treats.

    • For last names beginning with  A – H please bring in beverages
    • For last names beginning with I – Z please bring in desserts

SCOUT PARENT INVOLVEMENT

  • Thank you to the parents that are volunteering time and talents to Troop 29!   We have an excellent core group of parents that currently support the Troop and it is our objective to have 100% of the parents involved in some way with the Troop.
  • We are asking each and every parent to fill out a ScoutParent Volunteer Form so that we can better learn what hidden resources Troop 29 has in our Scout Parents.  Please take some thoughtful time to fill out the attached form and return it to the Troop by the end of the December.  You can also visitwww.ScoutParents.org for more information on volunteering to support the Troop.  The completed form can be returned to Dan Conatser, ScoutParent Coordinator, or to either Kevin Cronin, Scoutmaster or Anna De Santos, Committee Chairperson.

RENEWAL FOR MERIT BADGE COUNCILORS

7 Rivers District Council should have contacted you early  December about renewing as a registered councilor.  This renewal is separate than the rechartering we do as a troop.    If you have not yet already done so, please respond directly to the 7 Rivers District Council with your information.  Thank you!

TROOP COH  WED 2/27/13

Our next troop COH will be on 2/27/13.  All completed activity must be submitted to Mrs. Ryan by 2/6/13. Please plan ahead.

FRIENDS OF FRANKLIN CHRISTMAS DELIVERIES

  • The Friends of Franklin are again preparing for the Christmas food deliveries. This season approximately 200 families will be benefiting from the kindness of others.
  • As in the past we are hoping you can help.  We will be making deliveries Sunday, December 16th starting at 10:00 AM. As in years past Christmas deliveries also include gifts.
  • The pickup will be at the Clark Cutler McDermott’s facility located at 130 Constitution Boulevard Franklin. (Same place as Thanksgiving)

Troop News: Week of 12/10/12

THIS WEEK – REGULAR TROOP MTG

TROOP RECHARTERING FOR 2013

  • By the end of December, the Troop must submit its application for renewing its charter for the 2013 calendar year. The Troop’s rechartering fee is $65.00 per scout and a Boys Life subscription is an additional $12.00.  Rechartering Fees cover the yearly registration fee for all registered Scouts and Adults, insurance premiums for all scout outings and meetings, and some of the maintenance costs of the Troop.
  • During the rechartering process, the troop needs to identify the adults that will serve on the Troop Committee that meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month. The Committee provides support to the Scoutmaster in order to  insure the Troop’s program is successful. Please consider joining the Committee!
  • All Merit Badge Counselors must be registered with the BSA and be included in our rechartering package. If you would like to become a Merit Badge Counselor but haven’t completed an adult registration form, please do so ASAP and bring to the next meeting.

Troop 29 would like to thank all the fantastic parents that have stepped up and volunteered their time and talents in many ways to support the Scouts in Troop 29.  We have an excellent core group of parents that currently support the Troop through Adult Leadership roles, Committee Membership, Activity Leadership, Fund Raising and as Merit Badge Councilors.    Troop 29 would now like to ensure that each and every parent has the opportunity to show their support of the Troop and volunteer at some level.  Our objective is to have 100% of the parents involved in some way with the Troop.   The Scouts of Troops 29 are having both fun and some great learning opportunities as they progress through the Scout ranks.

  • January historically has the lowest blood donation levels of any month throughout the year. That is why Kevin Cronin invites you to attend the Gary Mirliss Memorial Drive. Gary Mirliss passed away over a decade ago after a long battle with leukemia. He was a man that lived life to the fullest and always wanted to help his fellow man. With you involvement you will be able to help a countless numbers of people.
  • The drive is held in partnership with Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Children’s Hospital. The Blood Drive is taking place on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the King Philip Middle School, in Norfolk, MA from 9am to 3pm.

THIS WEEK – COMMITTEE MEETINGS

  • The PLC meet will be held this week at 6:30pm followed by the Troop Committee meeting at 7:30pm – at the Charter School.  All parents are welcome to attend.
